Message from the KMISI Director

Most probably the genre of this text obliges me to convince you that there is no better place possible, at least in Ukraine, where you could have short, but intensive and intellectually demanding training in Ukrainian studies, but Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA or ‘Mohylyanka’) and Kyiv Mohyla Summer Institute.

And yes, I do have many arguments and reasonings for you – NaUKMA is one of the oldest and the best Universities in Ukraine; the very titles of the classes our faculty announced are not only interesting, but also provoking, immediately inviting to the discussions etc.

Yes, this all is true…

But I also have another very simple, but very convincing argument – you should come, because there is no other place, like Mohylyanka, in Ukraine.

With its always vibrant academic, social, cultural life; with its really democratic approach in making decisions, which makes life sometimes much more difficult - but no other way is acceptable here; with its intelligent, but extremely ambitious students; with its constant disputes with the supervising Ministry in our struggle for the university autonomy; finally, with its old and cozy Old Academic Building which so pleasantly smells old...

Hope you would believe me, I am with Mohylyanka since my 18… But yes, you are right – it is hot in Kyiv in August and “my” Mohylyanka is empty then, its faculty and students left for vacations…

But Mohylyanka teaches us to approach situation from different sides. Therefore may be - our Mohylyanka will be all yours during the two and a half week of the Institute; and Dnipro, with its nice beaches, just next door to Mohylyanka – sounds better? You would agree that far from all European capitals can boast that their students are preparing for the next classes at the beach...

Please think about that – and we would be very glad to welcome you at Mohylyanka this summer!
