Spring School on Transition Studies in Tartu
Call for Mobility Grant Applications
April 27-May 2, 2009
EuroCollege,
University of Tartu, Estonia
The breakdown of communism in East and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union spurred major discussions on how best to go “from communism to democracy” and “from plan to market.” As a consequence, “Transition” has largely been seen as a sui generis problem related spatio-temporally to countries having been subjected to “real existing socialism.” Now – twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall – it is, however, appropriate to start asking what can we learn from the post-communist experiences? The idea of the Spring School is to approach this question from various sides by bringing together scholars and students from the different fields within the social sciences. Transition is a multifaceted topic, which needs an interdisciplinary approach. The Spring School aims at increasing the interest in Transition Studies as a general topic of study and research, and should function as a means of discussion and exchange of ideas and experiences.
Participants and organisation
We expect about 20 scholars (both PhD candidates and established scholars) and 50-60 students (advanced BA and MA) to take part in the Spring School. In order to facilitate discussions, the Spring School will divided into a number of parallel workshops. The faculty members are responsible for the organisation of the discussions, providing reading materials, and giving presentations. The main idea, however, is to create an informal forum for exchange of ideas between scholars and students from different areas within the social sciences.
Working language
The working language of the Spring School is English.

The Mobility Grant covers reasonable travel expenses, visa, health insurance, accommodation, as well as per diem.
