Abstract
Over the past several years, there has been a rise of youth movements in post-communist societies. In 2000, the Serbian social movement Otpor played a prominent role in bringing down Slobodan Milosevic. Inspired by Otpor, the youth movement Zubr was formed in 2001 to challenge the power of the incumbent presiden Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Why was Serbia’s social movement more successful than Zubr in mobilizing citizens against the repressive political regime? This talk will seek to address this question by analyzing movement strategies and counter-mobilization measures by the ruling elite.
