International Summer School
The International Summer School (ISS) is an academic center for learning in an international context, and a forum for fostering intercultural understanding. Every summer from late June to early August it welcomes some 500 students from all over the world to its wide variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, mostly within the liberal arts and social sciences.
An Academic Experience
The ISS offers a variety of courses on undergraduate and graduate level, focusing on various aspects of Norwegian culture and society, and also on international issues Participants attend daily classes, take examinations and/or write term papers, and receive a University of Oslo transcript. Credits will be certified, but accreditation can only be determined by the students home university.
A Cultural Experience
The ISS offers a wide range of cultural and social activities and events, including folklore evenings, film seminars, debate meetings, sports, and an extensive excursion program to sights in Oslo and the mountains and fjords of rural Norway. ISS students elect a student council which is actively involved in initiating and implementing extracurricular events.
A Confidence and Peace-Building Experience
The ISS has been called a mini United Nations. Close interaction with people from all around the world establishes a foundation for deeper understanding and confidence between people of different backgrounds. The ISS also invites students from conflict areas to participate in special dialog seminars.
