What to expect?
The Interdisciplinary College (IK) is an annual, intense one-week spring school which offers a dense state-of-the-art course program in neurobiology, neural computation, cognitive science/psychology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and philosophy. It is aimed at
students, postgraduates and researchers from academia and industry. By combining humanities, science and technology, the IK endeavours to intensify dialogue between the various disciplines.
In a swiftly evolving world, the boundaries of systems are being pushed beyond their original limits. A process increasingly accelerated by technological advancements, especially artificial intelligence and machine learning. From integrating prosthetic limbs to leveraging AI for educational enhancement, we augment our bodies and minds everyday. Moreover, artificial
intelligence systems themselves are evolving, adapting to new data sets, environments, and challenges. This fusion of technology with biology, cognition, and society calls for a multidisciplinary approach to both understand and shape the expansion of our mind and bodies in the future.
The focus theme “Augmenting minds and bodies” encompasses three focus areas:
• Augmenting bodies: Focus on prosthetics, biomedical signal analysis, and adaptability of neural systems
• Augmenting minds: Exploring the use of AI in education, developmental psychology, and approaches to trauma.
• Augmenting artificial intelligence systems: Investigating online & continuous learning, transfer learning, and few-shot learning.
The IK offers a variety of courses, introductory as well as more advanced, method as well as practical. Detailed program can be found here.
Target groups
The IK aims to promote interdisciplinary approach, hence different focus areas can benefit from the participation. The areas of study can be related (but not limited to) the following disciplines:
• Computer Science
• Machine Learning
• Cognitive Science
• Neuroscience
• Sociology
• Psychology
• Educational science
• ...and many more
Scholarship and Participation
This year, the University of Bielefeld along with the Technical Faculty of the University of Bielefeld offer 10 full scholarships for the students from partner Universities from Ukraine. This scholarship covers student participation fee and accommodation in a triple room, as well as travel (could be covered partally).
The scholarship is designed for the students (Bachelor, Master, PhD) of the following universities in Ukraine:
• National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy
• Ukrainian Catholic University
• Zaporizhzhia National University
Please note that granting credit points (2 to 4 ECTS) is possible, but the accreditation depends solely on the sending institution.
As the courses offered during the IK are in English, the language proficiency is a hard requirement for the scholarship.
Application Process
If you would like to apply for the scholarship, please refer to the IK website. Scholarship nominations will be distributed on a competitive basis among the applicants.
During the application, please choose I wish to apply for a stipend in the Stipend application of the application for participation. The section Stipend for students from Ukrainian universities. Ib this section please indicate your university and submit a motivational letter (max. 2 pages).
The deadline for the application is 31.12.2024 - not those ones, mentioned in the online applications!
The scholarship team of the IK will reach out to the participants by 17.01.2025. Please note that depending on the number of applicants, an additional (online) interview might be necessary.
Participation
The IK itself takes place on March, 14-21,2025, but we would like to invite you to visit the University of Bielefeld on 13.03.2025. Then, the group will depart to the spring school in Möhnesee-Günne together.
The program of IK is comprised of many different courses (list), you can freely choose any that suit your topics of interest the most or correspond to your learning agreement for the accreditation.
Please note that the complete schedule will be provided at the website closer to the beginning of the school and there might be overlap between course tracks.
Additionally, during IK there will be a poster session, related to the ongoing research/interests of the participants. We would also like to encourage you to prepare your own poster to present.
